Proactive vs Reactive Captaincy

Reactive captains move a fielder to a boundary position after the ball has just been hit there for four. Proactive captains bowl to one side of the wicket and protect that exact scoring arc before the ball is delivered.

Three Field-Setting Blueprints for Club Captains

  • The Off-Stump Channel Plan: Pack the off-side ring (backward point, cover, extra cover, mid-off) with deep point and long-off back on the rope, instructing the bowler to bowl wide of off stump and deny room to pull.
  • The Spin Squeeze (Overs 7–14): Bring mid-wicket and cover inside the circle to stop easy singles, forcing the batter to hit aerial shots toward long-on or deep mid-wicket—the longest boundaries on the ground.
  • Death Overs Yorker Protection: With fine leg and third man inside the circle, protect straight long-on, long-off, deep mid-wicket, and deep square leg while executing straight yorkers or into-the-pitch slower balls.
