The Three Pillars of Bowling Analysis
Raw wicket totals only tell half the story of a bowler's spell. To truly evaluate how a bowler performed across powerplay, middle, and death overs, analysts look at three interconnected ratios:
- Economy Rate (ER):
Runs Conceded ÷ Overs Bowled— measures how many runs a bowler gives away per 6-ball over. - Bowling Strike Rate (SR):
Balls Bowled ÷ Wickets Taken— measures how many legal deliveries a bowler needs on average to take a single wicket. - Bowling Average:
Runs Conceded ÷ Wickets Taken— combines economy and strike rate to show how many runs are conceded per wicket claimed.
Why Dot Ball Percentage Is King in Limited-Overs Cricket
In a 20-over innings of 120 balls, any bowler who delivers 12 or more dot balls in their 4-over spell forces batters to take high-risk aerial shots against either them or their bowling partner. That is why CricÓ awards +1 MVP point for every single dot ball bowled, alongside +10 bonus points for maintaining an economy rate under 6.00 runs per over.
